Bench Storage Seat

For certain decorating applications, only a bench will do. Suitable for use in rooms throughout the home, benches run the design gamut. Some benches modestly meet seating needs, while others make a striking decor impact. Home Decorators Collection offers styles ranging from classic to modern, and many of our benches offer storage as well as seating. The entryway gives family and guests the first impression of a home. But as busy as we are, we often find ourselves piling shoes by the door and leaving keys, scarves and mail all over any open surface. The right storage bench can help keep the entryway or mudroom clutter free while also offering a place to sit. Storage benches can also hide away extra pillows or blankets in the living room or family room. When not needed for seating, a storage bench can be placed in front of a sofa to serve as a coffee table. You might also try one in the dining room; it’s the perfect place to store table linens. If you’re less in need of storage and more in need of a style refresh, try an upholstered bench. Our selection of upholstered benches offers cozy additional seating in a variety of elegant profiles, from skirted to tufted top to backless with generous rolled arms. Placed by a window in your living room or breakfast nook, these benches are warm and inviting. A wood dining bench is another stylish option. With a more subtle profile, these benches add seating to smaller spaces without overwhelming other furniture. They also support the open design of modern living spaces. Choose from clean, streamlined benches that complement modern, industrial or farmhouse concepts to intricately crafted styles that trend more toward classic traditional, cottage or world beat. Our selection has something for every style and every room. Find your perfect fit at Home Decorators Collection.

Add the Top Frame Frame the top of the bench using 1×4 poplar (Image 1). Use a miter saw or a circular saw to cut the wood to length. Attach the framing with wood glue and finish nails (Image 2). The purpose of the framing is to add strength to support the bench top and the weight of people sitting upon it. The side of the bench that will be against the wall will need an extra top frame piece to hold the piano hinge and bench top. Cut another 1×4 to the same dimension as the back piece and fasten it on top of the other with glue and finish nails. If your banquette will have a filler piece that won’t hinge open — for instance to fit in a corner or to go around post — combine the filler pieces with the top piece of the framing for a more seamless look. If you do have one of these non-opening top pieces, be sure to make them the same size as the opening piece including additional width for the hinge. Also, you’ll want to round-over the front edge of the bench top to make it more comfortable.

The opening should be large for easy access to the storage area inside, but to make the seat more stable, your door should not extend more than an inch over the sides of the bench.
