For many people who work in an office setting, sitting in an office chair without adequate back support can create a great deal of stress on the lower back. This is largely because in the seated position, the lumbosacral discs are loaded three times more than standing, and sitting without back support usually leads to poor posture, which stresses the soft tissues and joints in the spine. For many people, sitting in an office chair either causes or exacerbates lower back pain.

If there is any one factor that you can change to make spending eight hours a day in an office easier, it’s your chair. There is no shortage of evidence proving that being stuck in a chair for too long can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and worsen back pain. In fact, sitting too much is even called worse than smoking. Many people who have office jobs develop problems like numbness, spinal misalignment, joint pain, neck pain, and herniated discs — usually from sitting too long on a poor quality chair without support. While you probably do not want to spend a lot of money on a chair, a high-quality ergonomic chair is an investment in your health, comfort and productivity.

An ergonomic office chair can do wonders to alleviate lower back pain that can affect you long after you leave work for the day. If you already suffer from back pain, it’s important to understand that long hours in a chair compress the discs in your lower back, which eventually begin to wear down and cause sharp or chronic pain. This pain can be severe enough to affect your mobility for the rest of your life. The good news? It’s never too late to treat the problem and give your aching back the support it needs.

Ergonomic chair. There are a number of ergonomic chairs that are ergonomically sculpted with a lumbar support curvature built into the chair. To test if the ergonomic chair fits well, the user should sit up straight, with the head, spine, and buttocks in alignment. Then sit all the way back against the seatback. The curve of the ergonomic chair should naturally follow the curve of the lower back.

Every part of the chair is flexible, from the upper back to the lower back, the arms to the edge of the seat, from the height of the seat to its depth. Each chair allows full optimization so that every user can enjoy the same support and comfort as their coworkers. For the price, there is simply no better office chair.

Best All-Around Office Chair for $500: The strength of Soma’s signature chair is the back. The tall, weirdly shaped spine is designed to reduce upper back, neck and shoulder tension while still supporting the lower back; that is, this chair is all about improving your posture. On the downside, it’s not nearly as attractive as some of the other options on this list.

Best Ergonomic Office Chair for Lower Back Pain Under $1,000 : Would you expect that the only chair ever to be endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association would be exciting? No, you’d expect it to put function over form at every turn. That’s almost entirely true in this case. It wants to look good — Haworth even commissioned upscale German design shop Ito Design to help — but the result is rather bland. Instead, focus on the science behind the chair — especially the asymmetrical adjustment system, designed in conjunction with the Human Performance Institute at the University of Michigan, that lets sitters target problem areas and conform the chair to their natural body shapes.

While the spine can maintain a natural curvature without lower back support provided by the seatback, the natural tendency for most people when sitting for a long period is to slouch forward. This slouching posture pushes the lower back out, so that the natural inward curve goes in the opposite direction – outward toward the chair – straining the structures in the lower back.

Without lumbar back support, it’s more difficult to maintain the correct posture – and the lumbar spine and large muscles in the lower back have to work harder to support the proper curvature and alignment. Over time, as the body tires, the muscles holding the spine in such a position tend to become weak, and the head and upper back tend to lean forward to compensate the weakening of the lumbar muscles. The natural tendency is to slouch and/or lean forward in the office chair.

As popular as the Aeron chair is, it does have competition with the Haworth Zody chair. The Zody chair is the only chair to ever get an endorsement from the American Physical Therapy Association. As you may expect, this chair puts function over form. The chair isn’t unattractive — in fact, Haworth commisioned the German design company Ito design for assistance — but its focus on science and ergonomics is what sets it apart.

I'm 5'7″ 130lbs, and I find that this lumbar support cushion is a little too thick to sit comfortably in my car, it pushes me so far forward that I can't lean my upper back on the seat. That being said, for that exact same reason, it's a miracle worker at my desk job. It forces me to sit up more and not slouch, which helps my back, it also pushes me forward on my office chair to be closer to my keyboard and thus, much more ergonomical to work. I think the strap on the cushion is WAY too short, it wouldn't fit over my car seat or my office chair ( I ended up cutting the strap and sewing on elastic bands to each side then using sew-on velcro to make it work, which was an extra 15″ of strap). So, although I had orginally bought it for the car, I think it's too thick, but for that same reason works wonders for posture and egronomics at my desk job.
