To make your appliance garage really functional, we recommend using lift-up hinges for the bottom door of your IKEA appliance garage. This means the door won’t swing out, but will instead go straight up. You can see what this would look like in the custom microwave cabinet we designed for our client here. Please note: IKEA does not sell hinges like these, and you’ll have to purchase them separately.

As I promised in the garage makeover reveal, I’m sharing the full tutorial of how we hacked IKEA pieces into that awesome custom garage workbench. Aside from being a budget-friendly option, this tutorial will work for any size space. It’s totally customizeable!

The downside of my brilliant plan was that IKEA is almost 4 hours away. Conveniently, at the same time I was scheming up this workbench, my mom was scheming up a trip to my brother’s house. And conveniently his house is only 45 minutes from IKEA. And conveniently, she has a big SUV that I could drag all this stuff home in! Sometimes life works out so well.

Living in Los Angeles as a car guy typically means either being wealthy enough to afford a garage (i.e. Jay Leno) or flexible enough to wrench in an AutoZone parking lot. Alas, Jack Olsen's managed to find an incredible compromise.AdvertisementShort on space but long on creativity, Jack managed to fit everything a wrench-turner would need with Strong Hold cabinets, some DIY lighting, and a bit of repurposed Ikea furniture. But the best part? That second-hand Vesti hydraulic lift submerged in the ground and tiled to blend into the floor. He paid $455 for it. In the immortal words of Liz Lemon: I want to go to there. And I'll take the Porsche, too.

Plan B was to purchase unfinished lower kitchen cabinets and add a countertop. I was day-dreaming about how organized the garage could be if I had a ton of drawer space. BUT, standard lower cabinets were a bit too deep for the area of the garage we were using. And again, the price was getting a little out of control as I figured out how many we would need.

The second-from-the-right image shows the three door sizes you’ll need. The 30” and 20” doors are actual doors, but the 8.5” “door” is cut from a panel. Each of these doors is 24” wide because base cabinets are 24” deep. Where two base cabinets meet at a corner is also a 24” by 24” space, and that’s why this IKEA kitchen hack is 24” by 24” too.

Appliance garages go great in kitchen corners. For example, we designed this custom IKEA appliance garage for one of our customers (albeit with the old line, but the same principles apply).

Listen, most kitchens (and dining areas!) don’t have enough room to keep all of your fine china, platters and silverware — and that’s why everyone needs a credenza. But it doesn’t have to be a pricey investment. This sleek piece was made out of modern IKEA cabinets.

The garage shelves can take you a very long way, especially if you know how to implement them and how to efficiently store your belongings on them. However, the main question here is: why invest in a garage shelve when you can make your very own, from scratch, with very little effort? If you have decided to do so, here are some of the steps you will need to follow.

If you feel that there is simply not enough storage spage on the sides of your garage, and that the shelving areas have already been exploited to the maximum, then the last resort measure is an overhead garage storage. The only downside of this form of storage is that it is very difficult to implement, but other than that, it can truly benefit you in the long run.

Before I came up with the IKEA plan, we considered going with a pre-made bench like the one below from Amazon. But the nice ones we could find were not cheap, and we would have needed at least 2. Plus, it seemed like a waste not to have some storage down below. A girl needs STORAGE!

The internet obsesses over IKEA hacks for a reason. When your home feels packed with stuff, easy (and inexpensive!) storage solutions are always welcome. Work a little DIY magic, and even the biggest messes can disappear.

Design guru Emily Henderson upgraded IKEA’s RAST nightstand in a snap, repurposing handles as mod table legs. Plenty of space in the linen closet? Top it with a mirror for a fresh side table, or cute contact paper for kid’s room.

Ultimate organization in Brooklyn. This small New York garage has a place for everything. The compact solutions — hooks on the wall, file cabinets, open shelving — could prove useful in any storage space.

Even though our workbench was on a raised step in the garage, we still needed to add a little height to make it comfortable to use. Our options were either building a platform base, or adding a spacer between the dressers and the counter. Because we only needed to raise it 3-4 inches, going the spacer route was easier for us.

This is where an appliance garage can come in handy. It’s a special cabinet like the one you see above, and it’s built to house all of those useful items like toasters, blenders, food processors, stand mixers, you name it.
